What's it about?

Tag rugby is an adapted non-contact form of rugby league. Its rules are designed to create a free-flowing, fun game. It is a rare example of a mixed-gender sport, creating unique opportunities for groups of friends and colleagues to enjoy it together.

We organise competitions which involve a weekly fixture in a league that runs over a period of typically 4, 6, 8 or 9 weeks. You get a game every week, and every team plays in a final in the last week with prizes on the line - regardless of how you performed throughout the league!

The game is played 7-a-side, with a maximum of 4 men on the pitch at any one time. "Rolling subs" come on and off throughout the game, so you can have a match day squad of up to 14 players.

The goal is to score more tries than your opposition. To encourage a proper mixed game, a try scored by a female player is worth three points - so the teams that make best use of all 7 players are more likely to win.

How many players do we need?

Tag rugby squads usually have around 14 players who are available and committed to play most weeks of the league. You can play with as few as 7 players if you fancy playing with no subs, but anything from 9-12 would be considered optimal. There is no limit to the number of people who can play across the duration of the league.

What equipment do we need?

Tag rugby is primarily played in standard sports clothes, and running trainers or boots with plastic studs. If you're playing at a venue where plastic studs are a big advantage, we'll let you know. You can't wear metal studs in tag.

The only piece of specialist equipment you need is approved tag rugby shorts. Every player needs a pair, and they are durable enough to last for a long time. These are made of a flexible material and are longer than the tags - which has resulted in a sharp decline in finger injuries. You can get these from tagrugbyshop.com, and we have limited quantities and sizes available at the venue too.

We supply the tags, balls, and other equipment.

Where should we play?

We run two types of tag league that will be suitable for a corporate group:

  • Corporate social leagues for company teams who have a bit of experience and are used to playing tag. These won't be an especially challenging standard, but will feature standard games and league structures - so it's important that everyone is in a position to field a team most weeks.
We are running these in Sandymount and Ballsbridge

  • Corporate novice leagues, aimed at newer teams who need a bit more flexibility in terms of format and treatment by the referees. The aim of these competitions is to encourage teams who are very new to the game of tag to enjoy themselves and learn the game at their pace. We are running these in Ballsbridge.

  • Mixed Social Leagues which are played across Dublin, Limerick, Cork, Galway and Kildare. You don't need a specific corporate league in order to enter a corporate team, and most of our leagues will be suitable for your kind of group. We'd recommend booking a quick chat with us to discuss it all the same, to make sure you're playing at the level that best suits you.
